Dear Lunch Room & Detroit Street Family,

How is everyone? We hope you are well. We miss having you here with us! Here is an update on how we’ve been doing since Monday, when our dining rooms closed.

• Carryout business is reasonably strong at Detroit Street Filling Station and at The Lunch Room Bakery & Cafe. We are getting the hang of delivery and curbside pickup, altering our daily menu to maximize efficiency of staffing and ingredients, and are continuing to make delicious vegan food with love. One exciting new thing is that we now have for fresh bread for sale at Detroit Street Filling Station! Loaves of peasant bread are $5 and rye loaves are $7.

• The Lunch Room Diner & Canteen remains temporarily closed. You can get many of your Lunch Room favorite items at Detroit Street. If you see people inside The Lunch Room during this time, they are attending small-group AA meetings (with social distancing). This is an especially tough time for those in recovery. We are doing our part to help.

• How are our staff faring? We are currently employing -- part or full time -- 32 out of our total of 74 employees. The rest are on unpaid leave. Some have opted to not work during this period or have left town to be with family. For all of our staff -- currently employed or not -- we are offering unlimited free food and cash assistance (made possible by your gift card purchases) plus camaraderie. All employees are welcome to come in and work for a couple of hours on a beautification project -- for pay and a meal. If you’d like to help us continue to help our employees, we suggest purchasing a gift card.

• Myself and our management team continue to check in on all staff, more than half of whom are in recovery. We are determined not to let anyone fall through the cracks. If a staff member is having a particularly tough time, we give them a work shift right away. Emotions are running high, as you can imagine. Laughter and tears both happen with regularity. There is a lot of love. It is heartwarming to see how we all take care of each other.

• We have offered free food to displaced workers from businesses in Kerrytown Market & Shops. Please tell someone you know who may be in that position. 

• We will not turn away anyone for inability to pay. We are offering discounts and/or free food. The well-being of our community is a top priority.

• One reason we are able to help others is that you have been helping us. Since this crisis began (March 15), you have purchased $8664 in gift cards. Words cannot express our gratitude. Please keep helping us and we will keep helping others. Gift cards are available for purchase online here.

Detroit Street Filling Station and The Lunch Room Bakery & Cafe are open during regular business hours for carry-out. Detroit Street offers delivery (call 734-224-2161 to see a staff member arrive at your doorstep!). At either location you can request that your order be brought to you curbside.
