Banh mi chay

Vietnamese baguette sandwich with tofu, pickled carrot-radish, jalapeños, fresh cilantro & mint with garlic mayo, pickle & chips. Can be made as a GLUTEN FREE salad.

treetown tempeh reuben

Marinated, baked tempeh, caramelized onions and The Brinery sauerkraut on housemade rye bread with our special tangy dressing, served with a pickle spear and a handful of potato chips. Can be made as a GLUTEN FREE salad.

The “cheese” is rich with butternut squash & red bell peppers. With a crunchy almasen (almonds, lemon zest & sesame seeds) & parsley topping.

Do you take reservations? The Lunch Room Diner & Canteen does not take reservations. We operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Our restaurant is small and tables turn over quickly. When you arrive, we will do everything possible to seat your party quickly.

Do you cater? We do not provide off-site catering. We do prepare large carry-out orders however. Take a look at our menu here. We request at least 24 hours notice and 15% gratuity for orders totaling more than $75. Orders can be made by sending your order to:

How do you handle food allergies? Gluten, nuts, & soy are present throughout our facility. While we do our best to avoid cross-contact, we cannot guarantee these allergens will not be present in your food. When you notify us of a food allergy, the staff person at the register will make a note on your ticket. Upon seeing that ticket, the cook making your food will change their gloves, use new utensils and use new cookware when possible. We do not, however, have separate cutting boards, grill or cookware dedicated to allergen-free preparation. We advise people with life-threatening food allergies not to eat at our restaurant.

Do you have gluten-free menu items? Many of our menu items are, or can be made, gluten-free. When ordering, tell the staffer at the register if you have an allergy to gluten (see the note on allergens above in reference to our practices).
While we do take precautions, please note that its possible for gluten to inadvertently get into orders, and that mistakes do happen. If you have a serious allergy to gluten, you may not wish to take a risk by eating here.

Are your ingredients vegan, organic, local and non-GMO? The Lunch Room is a vegan restaurant. Only plant-based foods are served here. You never have to worry about the presence of meat, dairy, eggs, honey or anything processed with animal products. We only use top-quality ingredients and whenever possible use ingredients are organic and GMO-free. 

Many – but not all – of our ingredients are organic and non-GMO. When seasonally available, we purchase organic produce from the Farmer’s Market. Many of our staples, such as tofu, tempeh, coconut milk, ginger, brown rice, kidney beans, corn and tortilla chips, are both organic and non-GMO. We use non-GMO rice milk, almond milk, tortillas, margarine, soy curls. All of our lime juice, lemon juice, and orange juice is pure and made by a company that is in the process of becoming certified organic. Our primary oil that we use in almost all of our recipes is sunflower oil. The oil is certified non-GMO and processed in Michigan with only Michigan grown sunflower seeds. Many of our canned goods and dried goods are organic. When there is an option for organic that won’t break the bank, we choose it.

We also focus on supporting our community. We try to source our ingredients locally when possible. Our sauerkraut is produced in Ann Arbor, MI by The Brinery. Our tofu is produced in Royal Oak, MI by Michigan Soy Products. We source only Michigan made maple syrup. Although our sugar is GMO we find it important to support the 1,200 Michigan family farms and the 2,000 employees that make up the farmer-owned cooperative that produces our sugar.

We care about the health of our customers and the environment. It is also central to our mission to offer food that’s affordable to all. We make the best choices we can to meet the various needs of our community.

Where do you get your bread? It’s baked daily by our bakers, at The Lunch Room Bakery & Cafe in the Huron Towers Apartments, 2200 Fuller Ct. They make baguettes and rye for our sandwiches Monday through Saturday and English muffin bread and bagels for Sunday brunch. Our bakers also produce the incredible, rotating array of magical baked goods sold at our three locations every day.

Where can I park? There is a metered lot just outside of the restaurant. Parking is free after 6pm Monday through Saturday and all day Sundays and holidays. There is also metered parking on adjacent streets and metered lots nearby at Farmer’s Market and on the corner of N. Fourth Ave. and Catherine St. Parking is always free at our Bakery & Cafe, 2200 Fuller Ct, open Monday-Friday 8am to 3pm.

Is your restaurant kid-friendly? Children are welcome at The Lunch Room. While we do not have a kids’ menu, popular items with the younger crowd are macaroni & cheese and beans & rice. We have two highchairs and a changing table. Our restaurant is small and often crowded, and may not be suitable for active children or parking for large strollers. Weather permitting, our outdoor tables are ideal for people with young children.

Is your restaurant wheelchair accessible? Yes. Our wheelchair-accessible entrance can be reached from the parking lot adjacent (to the west) of the restaurant. The restaurant itself is wheelchair accessible and there is one ADA-compliant restroom. We make every effort to welcome and accommodate persons with disabilities.

Are gender neutral restrooms available? Yes. Both of our restrooms are gender neutral. We offer a safe place for any individual regardless of gender of expression and regardless if they are customer at that moment or not.

Can I order food to-go? Yes! The easiest way is to order and pay online, then pick up your food at restaurant at the designated time.  You may also order by phone, 734.224.8859, or in person at the restaurant. Our entire menu is available to be taken to-go with the exception of alcohol.

Do you provide table service? We have a hybrid service model. When you enter the restaurant, take a menu and find a seat – or look over the menu while standing at the counter. When you’re ready, order and pay at the register. Then have a seat and leave the rest to us. We’ll bring you water, silverware, and your food. Then we’ll bus your table. If all seats are taken when you arrive, we will help to seat your party as quickly as possible.

Do you sell gift cards? Yes! You may purchase them, in any denomination, at any of our three locations. The same card can be used at all three locations. It’s also possible to buy them online at:  We’ll mail them to you free of charge and with a customized written note.

Why do you have incense hanging from the ceiling? They’re not incense… they’re bamboo skewers! We have about 15,000 skewers – stained and dipped in blue paint and stuck into four soffits– hanging from in our ceiling. The skewers were hand-dipped and the soffits assembled by dozens of friends and volunteers in the months before our August 2013 opening. The installation creates a shimmering blue effect that some liken to water flowing. The project was the brainchild of our talented architects, Lisa Sauve & Adam Smith of Synechdoce Design. The finished product is incredible, however we have these words of caution: Don’t try this at home!

Are those spice jars just for show? No! We use the contents of all 66 jars on a regular basis. And we refill them almost daily. Take a look at the array of spices, then you’ll understand what makes our made-from-scratch food taste so good.
